Full Review of the CamelBak Alpine Explorer
The CamelBak Alpine Explorer is CamelBak’s largest hydration backpack with a 3 litre hydration bladder and 30 litres of storage capacity. Designed to be a versatile day pack suitable for a long days hiking, there is of course an abundance of room for everything and anything you could possibly want to take with you. If 3 litres of on-board fluid isn’t enough, there are also two side pockets designed specifically for carrying extra water bottles.
Plenty of Storage in The CamelBak Alpine Explorer
The CamelBak Alpine Explorer distributes storage between two main compartments. The largest compartment is uncomplicated – just as you would expect for storing most of your gear. At the top of the main compartment there is a small zippered pocket with a fleece lining which is suitable for smaller items which you would not like to get scratched such as sunglasses, mobile phones or an MP3 player. The smaller of the two compartments has a small web pocket with a clip for keeping your keys safe. There are also three smaller pockets inside this compartment for various items and loops on the exterior of the pack to attach your equipment onto.
The CamelBak Alpine Explorer is one of those packs with a pocket for everything. Everything has its place with pockets for your wallet, keys, sunglasses, extra water bottles, tools and any extras you may need. There is also a sneaky little mesh section between the two main compartments which is useful for stashing wet or sweaty clothing. After you are fully loaded, the CamelBak Alpine Explorer you can reduce its bulk by using the compression straps on its exterior.
The bladder in the CamelBak Alpine Explorer is situated in a compartment on the rear of the pack which is accessed with a zip opening; this is also where the hydration tube exits the pouch. The bladder in the Alpine Explorer is called the Omega Reservoir with Hydro Guard and has the usual CamelBak bite valve and shut-off mechanism to stop leaks. This is an easy hydration system to use and will stop the liquid from freezing in cold temperatures.
The Alpine Explorer Has a Useful Back Ventilation System
As with many packs, the CamelBak Alpine Explorer has a design feature to reduce the amount of heat on the wearer’s back and disperse hot air away from the wearer. CamelBak call this their Air Director system and it works very efficiently. Also to help comfort and fit, the shoulder and waist-belt straps are easy to adjust and do not come loose very often or easily. There is also a chest strap running between the two shoulder straps which is optional to suit your preference as it is completely removable.
The CamelBak Alpine Explorer is an extremely versatile pack for an all-day hiker. This pack is hugely roomy so nothing gets left behind and fits very comfortably despite its size because of its adjustable shoulder and hip straps. The back and shoulder padding is very comfortable and supportive without being too bulky. Made from waterproof, durable and tough material this is a pack you can rely on whatever the weather.

We got this pack on sale and are not very happy with it. The bite valve has no slot. The hose is kinked and it delivers water very poorly. It comes with a 3 liter hydration pack which is perfect for hiking all day. However it doesn’t provide enough room for socks and rain gear as well as my tools. Overall there are many problems with this pack. I am looking for a new pack at the moment.
