Full Review of the Camelbak Octane LR 2L Running Hydration Pack

The CamelBak Octane LR is a lightweight pack making use of CamelBak’s new lumbar situated Antidote bladder. The design of this bladder distributes the water to the lowest part of the pack instead of higher up on the back, thus evenly spreading the weight of the bladder and stabilising the load on the waist. Even when the CamelBak Octane LR 2 litre bladder is full of water, the load feels less weighty as it settles on the hips, leaving no weight pulling down on the shoulders.

Ideal for Adventure Racers or Mountain Bikers

The CamelBak Octane LR is advertised with adventure racers in mind but is equally suitable for mountain biking. The back panel of the pack is pretty handy as you can easily and rapidly refill the bladder without completely removing it from the pack. The underarm tube routing leaves the drinking valve right next to the face, allowing the user able to drink without letting go of the handlebars. In addition to this, this hydration pack comes with two upper pockets and two waist pockets which are ideal for keys, wallets and energy bars. But these storage areas are pockets and no more so think small.

The CamelBak Octane LR Weighs only 360g

Weighing a super light 360 grams, the CamelBak Octane LR is made of 70 denier mini ripstop material with extra strong panels of 420 denier nylon. The shoulder straps are made from a breathable fabric that allows extra airflow which increases comfort on long rides.

On the Negative Side…

This review would not be complete without my few gripes, although they are only very small. Firstly, the stitching at the bottom of the upper pockets is not very good as it came apart after a few rides, meaning that some of my gear ended up in the bladder area. Disappointing! This has been my experience at least so I would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced anything different. The only other thing worth mentioning is the zipper material as the zips tend to get a bit sticky and grubby after a few uses, especially on the bladder panel.

The Verdict?

All in all, the CamelBak Octane LR is a great pack for anyone into adventure racing, mountain biking and trail running. The lumbar situated bladder means that the load will always be balanced and the strain to your shoulders minimised. This coupled with its lightweight design make this pack a great companion.

About Allan Quinley

Allan has been on a bike pretty much since he was 7. He is a keen racer, both mountain and road, although he leans slightly more to the hills. He tears up London traffic daily on his way to work on his Bianchi Sempre 105. Why don't you give him a wave next time you see him? He takes care of everyone here in the Reviewed & Rated Cycling Dept.

Comments

  1. The water does not come out of the Camelbak Octane LR 2L Running Hydration Pack very easily. This pack has a great design, but after just two hours of riding my husband and I were out of water. To our surprise there was water left but it wasn’t coming out. This pack is terrible for running. I also wasn’t thrilled with have the water lower on my back.
