Full Review of the Deuter Hydro Lite 2 Hydration Pack

Deuter is a long-established company that has built its name and reputation on quality hydration packs and rucksacks (amongst other things). The Deuter range of hydration packs are certainly built with the end-user in mind as they are generally very lightweight, durable and reliable which is exactly what we need. Bringing this a little closer to home, the Deuter Hydro Lite 2 (also known as the Deuter Hydro Lite 2.0) hydration backpack has a slim and sleek design that boasts the high quality that we have come to expect from the brand. fa硤e.

Great All Purpose Hydration Pack

The Deuter Hydro Lite 2 is a 3 litre, 540 gram pack which is designed for the cyclist who wants convenient hydration on the go and just a little storage room for the bare essentials. Two of the 3 litres is taken up by the hydration bladder itself leaving only 1 litre of storage space for other gear so only pack your necessaries. The front storage pocket is accessed by a solitary vertical zip. This main storage compartment is thermally insulated to prevent your energy and chocolate bars from turning into melted mush. There are small exterior pockets for other small items which may be accessed more often or just to stick an energy bar in. The zips are very secure as they are fitted with press studs and will not stick out and get caught on anything. For an extra tight fit and comfort there is also the standard hip belt, and for safety, 3M reflectors at the front of the pack.

Ventilation on the Deuter Hydro Lite 2.0 is taken care of by what Deuter refers to as the “Airstripes System”. In a nutshell, this clever ventilation system consists of 3D Airmesh shoulder straps which are anatomically formed allowing comfortable movement and range. In addition to this, two knobbly foam layers which are shaped to the contours of your back allow minimal back contact and maximum airflow which in turn ensures breathability and ultimately less sweat patches. Nice one!

No Insulation on the Deuter Hydro Lite 2.0

One gripe worth mentioning is the fact that the drinking tube itself is not insulated which is not great in cases of extreme cold. What this means is that any liquid left in the tube is in danger of freezing in very cold climates. This is a slight (and only a very slight) oversight but here’s hoping that Deuter will take customer comments on board and fix this problem in the next model of this pack. Also and unusually, the drinking tube exits from the main compartment itself which is quite different although there is no immediately obvious drawback to this design.

The Verdict?

Overall, the Deuter Hydro Lite 2 is a streamlined and sleek hydration pack that will serve as a great companion on shorter rides that do not require much gear or much hydration. The bladder system is easy to use and is a boon to clean although the bite valve itself is a little more resistant than others, but that really is not a biggie. I would recommend this pack as it is competitively priced and if looked after, will serve you well for many years.
