The Elna eXplore 220 sewing machine is an entry-level machine primarily targeted at those who have just started learning to sew. Considering how affordable this machine is, users can hardly grumble, but it is quite basic compared to other similar machines on the market. There are some more high-tech features that you wouldn’t expect from a starter mechanical machine such as adjustable stitches, but it lacks in the basic areas of sewing.

Usability
This introductory machine should be capable of providing complete novices with the chance to learn a new skill or hobby and enjoy it. Whilst no one could complain that the Elna eXplore 220 sewing machine is not easy to operate, it does lack some basic features which could significantly improve the usability of the machine.
The Elna 220 is capable of providing satisfactory results on a wide range of fabrics, but it is best to avoid multiple layers and denim. Other than the disappointing range of options on the eXplore 220, it can cope with some very basic sewing projects – probably ideal for people planning on allowing it to gather dust for 350 days of the year.
Features
There are a number of very useful features on the Elna eXplore 220 sewing machine, including a thread cutter, variable pressure adjustment, variable stitch width and length adjustment, variable needle position, drop-feed, clip on presser feet, front-loading bobbin, high foot lift, and free-arm. You would struggle to find some of these features on any other machine in a similar price bracket.
The Elna eXplore 220 does also boast an automatic needle threader which is capable of taking the mundane task away from sewing, and allows users to concentrate on the task in hand.
However, this is where the good news ends I’m afraid. The Elna eXplore 220 offers users just 16 stitches to choose from – a poor selection by anyone’s standards. The stitches that are available include straight, zigizag, stretch, blind hem, overlock, and decorative patterns. The machine also provides one style of 4-step buttonhole, where users might prefer a 1-step facility.
Conclusion
Whilst novice sewers may not expect an entry-level machine to provide them with much more enjoyment than the Elna eXplore 220 sewing machine, those with a little more experience will be expecting more from the machine. This Elna machine has a high quality feel despite is low price bracket – just one of the many reasons that the brand is recognised and respected in the sewing industry. All in all, it’s not bad for someone who needs a sewing machine for emergencies, or for an absolute beginner.

The eXplore 220 mechanical sewing machine offers a lot for the price. It is easy to use and operates at a high standard. It is much easier to use than my last sewing machine. Plus after two years of use, I still haven’t had to repair any part of it.
