Full Review of the Janome J1024 Sewing Machine
With three dials and a handy stitch guide this machine looks as though it can really deliver the goods. It has an automatic buttonholer, which is a deal maker for some people as buttonholes are still the major bugbear for the amateur dressmaker so anything that makes it easier is very much sought after. At just 6 kg (13 lbs) it is really light to carry around, which is a bonus if you intend to use it for projects around the house. The free arm and the 24 stitches mean it is useful for using on both dressmaking tasks and home furnishings.
The automatic buttonhole pros and cons
The automatic buttonhole is a great feature if it works. On some machines although the buttonhole is said to be automatic you still have to move levers and make adjustments for each step. With the Janome J1024 Sewing Machine you just have to set one dial, but this is a bit clunky and I was put off at first by the noise.
Because it engages with an audible clunk I thought at first that I was forcing the dial to do something it wasnt meant to. Then I realised that this was the noise made by the feed engaging in a different position and then it was okay. The buttonhole you get looks very professional and, once you have the knack, is very easy to achieve.
Using the Janome J1024 Sewing Machine around the home
With its 24 stitches this machine would be useful in all sorts of projects around the home. I have made a lot of new curtains using it and following a tip from an experienced curtain maker I always hang my curtains unhemmed for a while to allow them to drop if the fabric has give in it. It also allows them to bed down on their hooks. If you turn them up then, he hem just brushes the floor and produces a very professional finish. With the Janome J1024 Sewing Machine being so light, it was easy to carry round the house and actually turn up the curtains while they were still hanging, saving a lot of time and climbing up and down stepladders.
Using a collapsible table I was able to set up and sew where I needed to, which was great. With the offcuts I made a load of cushion covers, including a few bolsters which I use to store quilts when they are out of season. To make them look a bit more decorative I used some of the stitches from the repertoire and I must say the whole thing looks great (say it myself as perhaps shouldnt!). You dont have to be a professional to get good results from this machine just use your imagination.
