Full Review of the John Lewis JL125 Sewing Machine
The lack of dials on the front and the very clear stitch guide give this machine a look which belies its very reasonable price. There is no free arm which will cause some users difficulty with dressmaking, but it does feature bobbin winding without removing it, which will be a plus for many. It is not too heavy at around 14lb and has a soft cover for storage.
A Novice Stitcher Meets the John Lewis JL125 Sewing Machine
Ever since I was thrown out of sewing class at school I have wanted to make my own clothes just to say I could, really. Many years on, I have finally bought a sewing machine and I have yet to make a dress or anything like it, but I have made a few cushion covers and a pair of tab top curtains, so Im getting there. The manual for the John Lewis JL125 Sewing Machine was not the easiest thing I have ever encountered. It assumes a level of knowledge which I personally dont have and Im not sure many people buying a machine in this price range would have either.
There isnt anything obvious about this machine where the thread goes may be a given for people who have been sewing for ages, but what about me? I had to get a friend round for my first few tries because I was having real trouble with it and even she said that the instructions werent clear Im sure she wasnt being polite, she has no trouble calling me an idiot as a rule. Now I have it more or less sussed I am getting on okay, but they really need to address the instructions.
What it does
The John Lewis JL125 Sewing Machine does all kinds of things I havent tried yet. It has a four step buttonhole which I have practiced and I think I will be all right with that. It has twin needle sewing, which is presumably easy enough but I am a bit shy about threading still, so that is still on my to try list. The free hand darning, which my friend tells me means it has a swing needle, has a special plate to allow the fabric not to be fed through in straight lines and that looks simple enough. I like all the fancy stitches and I have tried them and although you cant really call them embroidery stitches they do give a good effect and make things look a bit less basic if you have made something with a plain fabric. I made some denim pillow shams for my sons room and did some edging on it in dark blue and I have to say they looked the business. Boys never notice things like that, but he has said he thinks they are very smart, so thats something at least!
