Full Review of the John Lewis JL300C Sewing Machine

With smooth lines and a very uncluttered look, this sewing machine is fully computerised which in its price range is a very unexpected bonus. It has 30 stitches, including scallops, eyelet stars and herringbone as well as the more workaday overlock, blind hems and zigzag options. It has no fewer than five automatic buttonhole styles and a darning and monogram facility. For the keen stitcher on a budget, this machine would be ideal.

The John Lewis JL300C Sewing Machine in action

I really like this machine but it is really heavy. I used to store my other machine at the back of the cupboard under the stairs, but I have had to relocate this one because I couldnt lift it out. In this case though the weight does reflect the build quality and so that isnt a complaint, just a remark. I needed to upgrade because my previous machine had become a case of if only it did … this or that and so I needed more.

The John Lewis JL300C Sewing Machine delivers what I was after, with embroidery stitches which really are decorative and not just another version of a zigzag, as if often the case. The LCD screen is sensibly placed and readable from a working angle. That may sound obvious, but ones I tried in various shops dont seem to have taken that into account and you have to keep bending down or shielding it with your hand. The auto needle threader really is auto sadly more unusual than it should be and I found threading the machine up was very simple, following the arrows on the casing.

Why buy?

I think that the John Lewis JL300C Sewing Machine is a good buy for any fairly enthusiastic sewer. I personally dont devote hours to sewing, but occasionally I get a bit of a burst of enthusiasm and then I can work for hours. This machine makes that a comfortable experience; it is easy to set up (once you have lifted it onto the table, that is) and probably because of its weight you dont feel that it is sliding away from you, as you sometimes do with lighter machines.

If you like to make clothes with a bit of personality, the embroidery options, though not very numerous as with some more expensive machine, give you the opportunity to make your mark and I love the buttonholes. It had never occurred to me that buttonholes are different on different garments, but I have become a bit of a spotter now and can tell them apart. For anyone doing a lot of tailoring I should think that that would be a real bonus in a machine of this price.
