Full Review of the Singer 7470 sewing machine
The Singer 7470 sewing machine is targeted towards intermediate sewers or those of us who are ready to take the next step in our sewing repertoire. Many budget or entry-level sewing machines are not able to provide users with what they require, but this machine has a huge array of features for a reasonable price. Despite being aimed at those with a little more experience, beginners should not have too much trouble getting to grips with it either.

One-step functions
Being a seasoned sewer myself, I have to say that I am more than impressed with the easy-to-use functionality built into the 7470. Novices and experienced sewers alike will be thrilled to see the inclusion of advanced one-step functions, as this makes the tougher aspects of sewing much simpler. The one-step buttonhole feature provides two different styles both precisely balanced. The Singer 7470 sewing machine also has an automatic tie-off function which reinforces the strength of the start and end of seams.
The one touch stitch selection is fantastic as a simple push of a button will select the stitch that you are after as well as the optimum settings for length and width.
Heavy machine
Although the Singer 7470 sewing machine seems to be a reasonable weight at 7.5kg, there is just something about it that makes it feel heavier. Most users, even experienced ones, will complain that the machine is too heavy. Feeling heavy makes this Singer very difficult to transport, and so is best set up in one place and left alone. If you do not have any plans to move the machine, you will be happy with the sturdiness of the Singer.
Heavy upholstery
The Singer 7470 sewing machine brings delight to the faces of users when they realise that this machine is more than capable of handling heavy upholstery. Many machines of a similar quality and price are not able to sew heavy upholstery, so this news will be music to the ears of seamstresses around the country. The Optimum Power Control provides added power and accurate sewing when handling heavier fabric or multiple layers. So far, I have made a quilt and sewn three sets of curtains with no trouble at all.
Great Functionality
There are many plus points to the Singer 7470 sewing machine as it built to be versatile and to support your creative needs. Some of the fantastic features that top my list are the huge 172 stitch choice, automatic stitch tension, twin needle setting, ability for quilting and embroidery, quick reverse stitching button, centre zig zag taper, high sewing speed, stitch locking function, automatic needle threader, adjustable stitch length, LCD screen (great for viewing stitch patterns), and much more.
This sewing machine has a great variety of stitches for you to have a go at, more specifically the built in alphabet stitching, the numbers and the decorative stitches will give your sewing that added flare.
The jam-proof bobbin system is worthy of a special mention as it is well designed and works a treat. To quote Singer’s website, “The bobbin case floats above the hook, precluding thread jams. The machine will not jam, even when sewing on sheer fabric or no fabric at all.” Now that I have tested this machine for over a month, I can honestly say that I have had no problems with jamming.
A “how to” DVD is included with the machine which usefully covers the basics such as winding a bobbin, loading a bobbin and how to thread the machine (it comes with an automatic needle threader but there is a bit of a knack to getting it right). If all else fails, the Singer 7470 also comes with a manual that will walk you through its various functions and features.
Disadvantages
There are not too many things to grumble about with the Singer 7470 sewing machine but unfortunately there is always something to find. In this case the machine is very heavy, and has several plastic parts which do not inspire confidence. That aside, the main issue for me is the incredibly dim light. If you plan to use this machine, you might want to invest in an additional lamp or work in a bright environment.
The Verdict?
All in all, the Singer 7470 is a fantastic machine with good versatility and functionality. Aside from its weight and poor lighting, the 7470 is a great sewing companion that will not disappoint.
